And like Gutenberg and Luther with press and pen in hand…

What do you do when you haven’t finished your book for review?  You go download more books.  Free books.

Baen Free Library – Online since 2000, the Baen Free Library provides free science fiction and fantasy titles for reading online or for download in several formats.

I have mentioned Doctor Who:The Classic Series in a previous post.  Now they have added several free ebooks to the site.

“Rare and acclaimed Doctor Who novels available to read for free! All feature brand new artwork and extensive notes by the original authors.”

The books are available to read online or you can save each chapter as a page and read from your computer or a print out.

At approximately 28,000 titles, Project Gutenburg  may be the largest online digital library.  Ever.

The books available for download are in the public domain and include classic novels, plays and non-fiction of all kinds, as well as audio books and sheet music.

Just remember that you’re standing on a planet…

On Black Gate, Judith Berman blogs on story openings and what makes a story interesting enough to read.

Wizards of the Coast is offering a free pdf of Twilight Falling by Paul S. Kemp.

And finally, for the telescope wielding among us, Bruce Sterling blogs on The Catalog of Exoplanets. Very Cool.

March 8-14, 2009 is Read an E-Book Week.  If you need a book to get started on, head over to the Suvudu Free Book Library  and download one or all five of the books they are offering for free.

From the press release:

NEW YORK, NY – March 4, 2009 – Random House, Inc. today unveiled the first five titles in its new Suvudu Free First Book Library. Designed to introduce new readers to popular and acclaimed science fiction and fantasy series, the Suvudu Free First Book Library allows readers to access free digital copies of the first book in each series. The program launches with access to the following novels:
  • His Majesty’s Dragon by Naomi Novik
  • Assassin’s Apprentice by Robin Hobb
  • Settling Accounts: Return Engagement by Harry Turtledove
  • Red Mars by Kim Stanley Robinson
  • Blood Engines by T.A. Pratt

The books will be made available through Random House’s science fiction/fantasy portal, Suvudu.com (http://www.suvudu.com), as well as on other content services, including Scribd.com and the Stanza ebook reader application for the iPhone.

I picked up His Magesty’s Dragon by Naomi Novik.  I have the third or fourth book in this series already (Kahuna is notorious for buying books out of sequence) but I hadn’t found the first volume anywhere locally.  While you all are downloading give the Suvudu blog a quick read or sign up for the Del Rey newsletter so you can be informed when new free titles go up for download.

I have been trying to write the review for Blurred, by San Francisco singer/songwriter Alex Wise for a few months now but can’t seem to finish it. This is difficult for me to say but I get about halfway through the process and find myself so homesick I just can’t continue. The past few years have been full [...]

  • Arc & Stones…
    February 11, 2013 | 4:53 am

Now that Scooter is back sleeping nights I proclaim this ’dig myself out from under the mountain of un-reviewed music‘ week. Kicking off the week o’reviewing is Arc & Stones, the debut EP from Brooklyn band Arc & Stones. The guys are Dan Pellarin (vocals), Ben Cramer (guitar), Joe Doino (drums) and Eddy Bayes (bass).  I had [...]

  • Telegraph Taboo…
    January 21, 2013 | 8:45 am

So, I was in the mood for some blues and whoosh – blues appeared. Other people get coupons, bills and news updates in the mail while I get blues music. Cool new blues music in the form of the debut release Telegraph Taboo from the Chicago-based band Nick and the Ovorols. This is not a pretty album. The vocals on a few tracks [...]
