Frank Turner - The Way I Tend To Be

random

To see what goes on Halloween night…

And we are live!

Halloween 2012 is officially underway at our house. Kahuna just left with the girls and I’ve had my first band of trick-or-treaters. Steve (my Captain America coffee cup) and I were going to give away candy here but I can’t find him.

Yes, yes I am giving away chocolate candy eyeballs.

6:47 – Huh, I pictured Batman a lot taller…

6:52 – There are Hershey bars in the candy bowl…

Listening to Haley Bowery and the ManimalsHalloweenCheck out the track over on their Bandcamp page.

7:08 – okay, Jason is not as creepy when he is under five feet tall…

7:14 – Oh, how cute..a little bitty pirate. And a pirate princess…

7:20 – The ‘Bit has wandered in claiming sore feet. Sigh, when that wins out over candy you know they are growing up.

7:26 – Huh, a ninja pirate…

From Jack Moore - @Jack_Moore7 – “Love how neighbours try out do each other on Halloween. Soon they’ll be putting severed heads on spikes tower of London style…”

7:31 – Kahuna and Scooter the firefly fairy (sigh, the little cat costume was so cute but she wouldn’t wear it) returned home with a full pumpkin.  Ohh, a frosty coupon, lots of chocolate, lots of gum that will go into the ‘Bits bag, pretzels…wait, who gives away pretzels for Halloween?

7:38 – Pretzel mystery solved. They are neat little bat and pumpkin shaped pretzels. Oh, Oh SCORE! Scooter has a gummy eyeball!

7:41 – Whoa, Skittles as far as the eye can see. We will be tasting the rainbow for days.

7:46 – Alas, my candy is gone. All I have left are two lonely little eyeballs and a jolly rancher.

7:52 – Okay, candy sorting and eating have commenced.

I’ll sign off with a little Halloween tune from Have Gun Will Travel called

 The Living Dead Blues -

While the rest of the world keeps on passing me by…

Whoa…it’s like Monday…even though it isn’t.

I’m playing in the sneak preview of City of Steam on the 28th. Okay, okay…it’s more like I (and others) are bug hunting for free but what I’ve seen of the game so far looks pretty cool so I am excited it is about to start.

There are still a few tickets left for the Steve Carlson – Christian Kane StageIt show tomorrow night. About ten a day go up since the second sell-out so if you still need one try checking the page every few hours. As of 2:20pm est they have four listed.

My car is paid off! Yay!

Now my car wants a shiny new catalytic convertor. Sigh.

I am going through email so if you have sent me one recently I WILL get a reply out to you today. I just have to email my dad-in-law first.

When I was 18 it never once occurred to me that one day I would be sitting in a room dedicated to coffee (seriously) and telling the world at large that I am not sure what color hair my kid went to school with today. Life is…strange.

BTW the ‘Bit is enjoying her guitar class. She has two honors classes this semester and an advanced design class so Kahuna and I are glad she has guitar so she can catch her breath.

I am giving ‘mobile mudding’ a try for my next Mud review. We will see how it goes.

Okay, back to work on my review.

Just get gone…

Got an email from Reverbnation with some messages which reminded me that hey, I have a Reverbnation account.  Sigh. If the internet were my house, Reverbnation would be a shelf in my closet with lots of cool things I never have enough time to go sort out.  Anyway, marked a few bands for listening later, liked a couple others and stuck a few new songs in my playlist.

If you are not listening to ninebullets radio on Thursday nights at 10 pm you are missing a great show. True you are probably finishing whatever project needed doing unlike me, but sometimes sacrifices must be made in the name of cool music.

Check out Mike Tobin’s interview with Tinsley Ellis over on Times Square.

TS: So why did you go down the blues route, as oppose to rock and roll or jazz, or any other genre?

TE: Well, the Beatles got me into the British invasion music, but then the Rolling Stones, The Animals, and The Yardbirds all had the same thing in common. They were all doing the Muddy Waters/Howlin Wolf/BB King thing. Then I went to see BB King when he was playing at a hotel lounge in North Miami Beach (I grew up in South Florida). He was playing there for a week and he did a teen show, which meant they shut the bar down and sold soda pop and stuff like that. He stood in the lobby and greeted all the kids. I was about fourteen at the time and it just knocked me out…”

Nice interview but I do have a quibble with the line “His tone suggests that he’s been gigging non-stop since the get-go“. Way back at the dawn of time when the blog was on typepad and under a different title, I kept posted a running list of about 10 – 12 blues performers and their gigs. Ellis was one of them and he was ALWAYS working. “Suggests” is not the word I would have chosen.

Put several new tracks up on the jukebox including one from The White Buffalo. I have a review of their new EP, The Lost and Found that I’ll be posting on Monday. I took the monthly designation off the juke so I can take the songs down or leave them up as long as I want depending on how much I like listening to them.  Or how busy I get.

I have a preview vid and short article up on GamingHUD. City of Steam is a steampunk-themed MMO in production and you can still get in on the alpha test if you hurry.

Since Steve Carlson never wound up on my door step with his gear, I have moved my office into the sunroom. While I am enjoying the view from the windows and having more space I really miss staring at my coffee maker. Sad, but true.

Okay, I need to go before I start posting pics of my coffee maker, Scooter and her Angry Bird plushies as pirates, Ralof from Skyrim or the neighbor walking his dog.  Yeah…it’s that kind of day.

Have a good weekend!

Glory days, well they’ll pass you by…

Okay, I can spend hours trying to get the formatting in the sidebar perfect or I can just toss this in a post and go play Skyrim.

Kahuna was playing around on his iPad with  LaDiDa and came up with this little ode to the guards of Skyrim and their glory days.

Guards Lament  – streaming on Khush

Dovakhin, the guard told me
I took an arrow to the knee

Before that I was more like you
Stout of heart and strong of thew

I strode the world with axe and fire
But now the situation’s dire

Dragons rise to burn the land
The High King dies at Ulfrics hand

Thalmor scheme and plot and slay
The Greybeards call to you this day

To raise your voice and learn to see
The Dragonborn you’re meant to be

Dovakhin, the guard told me
I took an arrow to the knee

Now toddler toothbrushing, fresh coffee and then Skyrim.

Action is his reward…

I can always tell it has been a slow week on the blog when I only have a couple of comments in the spam folder. ;)

For the Skyrim obsessed among you - Hurstwic has Viking Age clothing. I love the idea of Vikings in footie pajamas and stirrup pants. Sadly, I had to Google the correct spelling of  ‘footie’.

I have a new-ish article on Skyrim up over at GamingHud. We have a lot of new Skyrim content, a game review and article from our newbie author Eric Walsh, a review from Faye, lots of pretty pictures of Batman and a ‘state of the website’ message from the Boss.

Want a Joe Bonamassa bobblehead for Christmas?  Probably too late to ship before the holiday but while you wait, download a free copy of Joe singing Merry Christmas, Baby.

Scooter is wearing a blanket as a cape and has proclaimed herself a SuperHero. When I asked what her super power was she said, “Loud Noise”.

I know, I know.  I am rambling all over the place but it has been a very busy week and I struggle to maintain focus. Maybe everything will slow down this weekend and after. Plus I need to go make the resident superhero a peanut butter triangle.  Apparently she needs to ‘recharge’ her powers.

Anyway, have some Ramones.

Duck Nation…

This is the sort of thing Twitter makes me do.  I am so so so very sorry.

Every one needs a kiddie pool full of duckies... - pic by Clif Kosterman

I should’ve known all along that time would tell…

Eight days till vacation!!!

The ‘Bit just wandered in.  She hasn’t washed her face or brushed her hair but she has checked her Twitter account.  Priorities, she has them.

Micah Schnable has finished recording his new album.  Virgil Dickerson says “the plan is to have it out by the anniversary weekend.”  That puts the release sometime in September.  Check out a vid of Blame it on Geography, from the new album and also up in the featured spot on the blog today.

Wheel of the Infinite by Martha Wells is now available on Kindle

I know it is supposed to be three things make a post but I can’t think over the Go-Go’s song stuck in my head this morning.  Off to make lunch. Or drink another cup of coffee.  Or both.

It’s a wandering star that lights my way tonight…

Okay – first off a big thanks to SuperTech Josh for fixing my blog.  There was a thing (not the Thing – just a thing) and my blog was down and he took care of it.  Then I went in and made some changes he suggested and such.  Then I deleted all visible pages except the main.  I’ll put them back up sometime this weekend but I am tired of the spam coming in.  I think I’ll set them as no-comment and just avoid the whole mess.

The universe has decided I am never writing this mud review.  Seriously, every little thing that could possibly get in the way of me finishing it (cause I have most of it down) has happened.  Still, I slog on.

I am up to my eyeballs in new music and still havent put any up for listening.  Maybe this weekend I’ll just dump all of it on one player and give a short description of each in a post.

Martha Wells was guest of honor at ApolloCon 8 which is, cool of course but the most awesome thing was she got to tour NASA.  All the NASA that is NASA.  Inside modules control rooms and she took pictures!   Check out her blog posts for pictures.

I ran across The Mary Sue – a blog on geek girl culture and picked up the featured video.

Female Armor sucks – a vid

While I haven’t encountered the problem on muds I do run across it on graphical games from time to time.  The guy will be so heavily armored I wonder how he can breathe, much less move or fight and my character will be stuck wearing a chain mini-skirt and a ”silk with decorative metal swirls’ war bra.

You all should read Bra Melting by Janni Lee Simner ;)

  • Blurred…
    February 12, 2013 | 4:06 pm

I have been trying to write the review for Blurred, by San Francisco singer/songwriter Alex Wise for a few months now but can’t seem to finish it. This is difficult for me to say but I get about halfway through the process and find myself so homesick I just can’t continue. The past few years have been full [...]

  • Arc & Stones…
    February 11, 2013 | 4:53 am

Now that Scooter is back sleeping nights I proclaim this ’dig myself out from under the mountain of un-reviewed music‘ week. Kicking off the week o’reviewing is Arc & Stones, the debut EP from Brooklyn band Arc & Stones. The guys are Dan Pellarin (vocals), Ben Cramer (guitar), Joe Doino (drums) and Eddy Bayes (bass).  I had [...]

  • Telegraph Taboo…
    January 21, 2013 | 8:45 am

So, I was in the mood for some blues and whoosh – blues appeared. Other people get coupons, bills and news updates in the mail while I get blues music. Cool new blues music in the form of the debut release Telegraph Taboo from the Chicago-based band Nick and the Ovorols. This is not a pretty album. The vocals on a few tracks [...]
