The Record Company – This Crooked City

Born on the wrong side of the tracks…

How many guitar straps does Martin think I can possibly use? I get that a lot of the emails are just auto-sends with whatever is on sale but still.

Amazon informs me that some Walter Trout tracks I bought from them in 2006 are now up in the Cloud if I want to snag.  I long ago ripped tracks off the CD for my mp3 player and then again for my phone so I am not sure what I am supposed to do with the Cloud versions. It may just be a way to introduce their new auto-rip feature. Any physical CD you buy from them with a certain logo also gets you and immediate digital version to download. Most of the indie sites I buy from have been doing that for years now. Welcome to the 21st century Amazon.

The best thing in my mailbox lately?

The Record Company - On the Move

Some new and some nearly new tunes in the juke this week with Semi-Twang - The Wrong Side of the Tracks, Wires in the WallsIn the RainDebbie DaviesDone Sold Everything, Skyla Burrell BandBottom of my Heart, and finally the Hickman Dalton Gang with Whiskey Rain – just because I can.

The featured vid earlier this week was Traps from Black Music by the Dark Horses. They seem to be somewhat of a performance art kinda band  so I will likely watch their vids and forego snagging the tunes but if you like that kind of music expression you should check them out on their facebook page or follow them on Twitter @darkhorsesmusic.

The featured vid right now (grin) is a live acoustic version of Ashes to Ashes from Peter Parcek 3. You all should snag Peter’s facebook page not only for the blues music he and his band play but also for his articles and stories about guitar players and blues musicians.

Also – added shiny new track Turn me Loose from The Record Company to the jukebox. The guys are offering it as a free download so you all go snag it while I make a pot of coffee.  Ummm, coffee.

Blurred…

I have been trying to write the review for Blurred, by San Francisco singer/songwriter Alex Wise for a few months now but can’t seem to finish it. This is difficult for me to say but I get about halfway through the process and find myself so homesick I just can’t continue.

The past few years have been full of change for us. We moved hundreds of miles away from our family, our friends and our home of many years. Our oldest has gone from a quirky teenager to almost an adult while her younger sister has gone from a barefoot baby in diapers to a little girl who will be starting school in the fall.

Say goodbye to Ponchatoula

Down the track, fall outta time

Say goodbye to Ponchatoula

Down the track, fall outta time

Sometimes I miss our old life. I miss my front porch swing and the feel of worn wood under my bare feet.  I miss the smell of honeysuckle in the spring and cape jasmine in the summer. I miss the sight of dogs and kids playing in the yard or a cat stretched out sleeping on a porch column base. I miss the sound of Kahuna rocking on the porch, picking a tune out by ear on his guitar. I miss Kahuna’s Mom, who passed away almost a year ago.

Throw a pebble in a stream

of a clouded memory

Syncopated in a tune

of a moon, cow, dish and spoon

My favorite song of the album is Ponchatoula. Not only does it have a haunting melody and beautiful lyrics, each word seems carefully chosen to evoke feeling and memory. Almost too well in my case.

This trend continues with Blurred (be the only thing that’s true) and the jazz-tinged Someone Else Like You (what’s past and gone may still be here with you) but the album is not all slow and wistful. Tracks Blame on my Shoulder and the bluesy Secrets both inject a little rock into the mix while the wonderfully cute Gonna Give it Back to Nature (or as Scooter and I like to call it - The Poor Worm Song) adds some whimsy to counter the heavier themes. Alex also does an amazing job on his cover of Steve Forbert’s Romeo’s Tune. I love the harmonica bits.

Whether it uplifts your spirits, stirs your anger or evokes sadness, music should make you feel. The songs on Blurred do that and so much more. This is a wonderful album and I highly recommend you all give it a listen.

Blurred is available in digital format from Amazon and Bandcamp and in CD format from his website and CD Universe.

You can check out Alex on his facebook page or on his website. Catch him on the air with Sea Change Radio or follow him on Twitter @SweetAl

Telegraph Taboo…

So, I was in the mood for some blues and whoosh – blues appeared.

Other people get coupons, bills and news updates in the mail while I get blues music. Cool new blues music in the form of the debut release Telegraph Taboo from the Chicago-based band Nick and the Ovorols.

This is not a pretty album. The vocals on a few tracks come in a bit low, there’s some distortion in a few places (okay - lots of distortion) and extra grit and fuzz in the guitars. All those imperfections combine to give the album a raw, almost live sound. It’s loud and messy and grungy and so very, very good.

My favorite is the screaming, pounding, rocking Honey, Please -

You said boy I’ll make you happy
Oh just give me one good chance
I told you once before
I ain’t gonna do this dance -

I also like Take the V Train with it’s heavy guitars and Bad Company feel, and the blues-y Heed My Words:

The only track I didn’t really care for was Hey, Mr President but I’ll be honest and say my dislike stems from political reasons, not musicial ones.

Taken as a whole Telegraph Taboo is a solid debut and worth buying. If you all need to hear a bit more you can stream the album from the bands’ website, from amazon or from itunes.

Carlos Showers (guitar),Vic Jackson (bass), Nick Peraino (vocals, guitar), Lance Lewis (drums)

Telegraph Taboo releases tomorrow, January 22, 2013 and is available in digital format from Amazon and iTunes and in digital and CD format from the Nick and the Ovorols website. You can also check out the band on their facebook page and follow them on Twitter @ovorols

The Week in Music…Blogs – Jan 12, 2013 to Jan 18, 2013

Everyone has snow…except us. Apparently, through the force of my will alone, I have created the only snow-free zone in the southeast.

Bman’s Blues Report had a nice article on the upcoming 3rd Annual Clarksdale Film Festival. If you all get a chance to go, check out Cat Head while you are roaming around town.

Little Indie Blogs previewed the new single ‘Portrait‘ from singer Josephine Oniyama and shared her touring schedule for the next couple of months.

Many years ago when the ‘Bit was still a tiny bit, Kahuna and I lived in Florence, Al for a while. Florence is a cool place to live – big blues festival in the summer, great downtown and some of the neatest kid parks I have ever seen. It is also just across the river from Muscle Shoals, Sheffield and Tuscumbia. Together they form what locals refer to as “The Shoals”.

This is also the place where four session players (Barry Beckett, Roger Hawkins, David Hood and Jimmy Johnson) bought a recording studio in 1969 and created the distinctive Muscle Shoals Sound. The documentary Muscle Shoals premiered at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival. Below is the trailer for the movie.

Autopsy IV from Ninebullets.net put out another awesome radio show Thursday night. I have been trying to find a Dorado track to put in the jukebox so it was nice to hear them in the show. He also had tracks from Drag the River (yay!) and The Heavy Horses as well as a new release from Shooter Jennings. Pop over to Ninebullets and check out the track list, then follow the link to listen to the recording of the show. Bryan shared the news on his Facebook that the Ninebullets Radio Show will be moving to Saturdays 2-4pm in Feb. (This adds an hour more of music to the show!)

Okay, must have more coffee and a biscuit. As always, if you have a music post or news you want just drop a comment below or send me an email to guitarkit at gmail.com and I’ll put your link in the post.

I don’t wanna feel, cause I don’t wanna bleed…

Brewed Southern Pecan coffee this morning. The house smells like pecan pie.

New tracks in the jukebox this week. I’ve also posted links to all the jukebox songs within the post for anyone pulling the blog on feed. Unless it says differently these are all linked from Soundcloud.

The Delta Saints - Chicago, Jack Moore covering Something Good, Viv and the Revival with Early Ape – I Want It, Fife and Drom – Wicked Tongue, and from Reverbnation W. B. Johnston – Sky Blue.

Precious Bryant passed away this weekend. The Music Maker Relief Foundation has a nice article about her on their website.   Check out  Fool Me Good from her 2002 release of the same title over in the jukebox.

The featured vid this week is Green Lights by Eastern Rift off their new EP Left of the Mark. You can check out more stuff from the band on their Facebook page or over on their Reverbnation page.

I was born with a heart made of copper and gold…

So we have started watching Assassins Creed – the Television Series or Arrow as they are calling it. I am patiently waiting for Ollie to dive off a building and land in a wagon full of hay.

Updated the jukebox with a few newly released tracks and a few released not long ago. Check out shiny new tracks from Viv and the RevivalThea Hopkins w/Peter Parcek, The Amends and The Delta Saints along with a couple of tracks from last year by The Heavy Horses and The Bixby Knolls.

(Sigh…I really wanted Copper and Gold (The Heavy Horses) for the juke but can’t find a version I can embed.)

The featured vid this week is Time Machine off the soon-to-be released album Turquoise by Devon Allman.

That’s pretty much it.
