To see what goes on Halloween night…
And we are live!
Halloween 2012 is officially underway at our house. Kahuna just left with the girls and I’ve had my first band of trick-or-treaters. Steve (my Captain America coffee cup) and I were going to give away candy here but I can’t find him.
6:47 – Huh, I pictured Batman a lot taller…
6:52 – There are Hershey bars in the candy bowl…
Listening to Haley Bowery and the Manimals – Halloween – Check out the track over on their Bandcamp page.
7:08 – okay, Jason is not as creepy when he is under five feet tall…
7:14 – Oh, how cute..a little bitty pirate. And a pirate princess…
7:20 – The ‘Bit has wandered in claiming sore feet. Sigh, when that wins out over candy you know they are growing up.
7:26 – Huh, a ninja pirate…
From Jack Moore - @Jack_Moore7 – “Love how neighbours try out do each other on Halloween. Soon they’ll be putting severed heads on spikes tower of London style…”
7:31 – Kahuna and Scooter the firefly fairy (sigh, the little cat costume was so cute but she wouldn’t wear it) returned home with a full pumpkin. Ohh, a frosty coupon, lots of chocolate, lots of gum that will go into the ‘Bits bag, pretzels…wait, who gives away pretzels for Halloween?
7:38 – Pretzel mystery solved. They are neat little bat and pumpkin shaped pretzels. Oh, Oh SCORE! Scooter has a gummy eyeball!
7:41 – Whoa, Skittles as far as the eye can see. We will be tasting the rainbow for days.
7:46 – Alas, my candy is gone. All I have left are two lonely little eyeballs and a jolly rancher.
7:52 – Okay, candy sorting and eating have commenced.
I’ll sign off with a little Halloween tune from Have Gun Will Travel called

This is pretending to be a ‘Best of’ list for 2011…
2011 was an exceptional year for music and I am so happy I was able to listen to so much of it. I can’t do ‘Best of’ list since I just can’t chose which was the best but I do have a few favorites I want to toss out before the year is done.
- Favorite Albums -
Closer to You by The Coronas
Mergers and Aquisitions by Have Gun Will Travel
Keep Your Devils Around by American Scarecrows
Revelator by the Tedeschi Trucks Band
- Favorite New (to me) Band(s) -
The Amends, Arliss Nancy and Gypsy and the Wolf
- Favorite New Singer(s) -
Jake Smith (aka The White Buffalo), Charlie Spraggs and Leslie Craig
- Favorite Song(s) -
Shook Up by Viv and the Revival, Wild Hearts by American Scarecrows and Break Me by Steve Carlson
Favorite Music Vid – This was so, so very hard to pick.
Also check out:
Here Comes the Sun by Steve Carlson
Good Man by Gypsy and the Wolf
All You Need is Now by Duran Duran
High points (music-blog-wise) for me in 2011 include Twitter (how did I live without for so long?), Daniel Logan and Jack Moore (again, how did I live without for so long), StageIt and Reverbnation, Ninebullets Radio and the daily posts, pics and videos from The Coronas while they recorded their new album in LA.
No list of mine would be complete without a quiet ‘thank you’ to Virgil Dickerson of Suburban Home Records. In May of 2007 he put up a free sampler cd of SHR bands on eMusic and I snagged some tracks. I had already moved to mostly blues and some indie in my music but finding those bands tipped the scales for me. Nearly five years later almost all the music I enjoy comes from small labels like SHR.
Got a 2011 list of your own? Toss it in the comments section as I am always looking for new bands to squee over.

Southward as you go…
So Rockstar Games wants to sell me and all of you a 10″ Max Payne doll…Okay, okay, they call it a statue. It is part of the Max Payne 3 Special Edition release.
We are headed to Alabama this afternoon to spend the week of Thanksgiving with family. For the Eagles fans among you I have mentioned before that Kahuna’s aunt and uncle live on the actual Seven Bridges Road. We will be staying at our old house and hoping the nice weather holds so we don’t freeze while we are there.
Steve Carlson is doing another StageIt concert this Sunday, November 27th. At present the time is 5pm EST so I am not whether I can go or not. It depends on when we get in from the trip. I’ll stick the info in the top box a little later today.
Ninebullets.net premiered the new Have Gun Will Travel video, Thirteen Miles to Empty, on their website a few days ago. So I snagged it. Mergers and Acquisitions is one of about five new releases I am taking with me on the trip.
If Fogo de Chao really wanted me to eat at their restaurant they would build one in Raleigh.
I will get through all the rest of the email and such today and watch the vid Shoreacres from The Task at Hand sent me. After I have another cup of coffee…and pack.

Sunshine fall on me…
How is it only Wednesday?
So we were watching the H50 premier and McGarrett was doing push ups and I was like, oh please, his hands are twenty miles apart. McGarrett is/was a Navy SEAL and not just any Navy SEAL, but Steve the SuperSEAL. Seriously, we are supposed to believe he gets those muscles and SuperSEAL abilities by doing normal, wide-spaced push ups? He couldn’t have been doing, I don’t know, divebombers maybe? Diamond push ups? Feet up on the bunk push ups? One arm push ups? Any of those would have been more realistic for his character’s conditioning and abilities.
Anyway…
Explain to me again why I just can’t just post a Ryan Bingham video everyday and call it a blog?
Martha Wells’ new novel, The Serpent Sea is available for pre-order at Amazon and at Barnes and Noble. (no cover art yet which is too bad because the cover I saw was cool) While we impatiently wait for it to release and ship, Wells has put a shiny new short story, The Almost Last Voyage of the Wind-Ship Escarpment, up on her website. Read the story for free and if you like it, pop something in her tip jar.
Mergers and Acquisitions, the new album from Have Gun Will Travel, will release on November 1, 2011. Starting Friday September 23, 2011 you can pre-order the album from Suburban Home Records and receive a digital download. And a coozie.
Okay, I am done for today but tomorrow, there will be another Ryan Bingham vid. You have been warned.

It’s just another day…
The Coronas are in Los Angeles and recording their third album at The Sound Factory. You can keep up with them on the new third album blog or on twitter at @TheCoronas.
Micah Schnable is out of the studio and on the road along with Have Gun Will Travel. Their tour began last night in Colorado Springs and winds its way east and south (with a show in Raleigh on the 28th for the local folks) to end September 30 in Kennesaw, GA. Check out Suburban Home Records for the complete tour list.
Micah’s new release won’t be available until November but you can pick up a copy of the new CD by Have Gun Will Travel, Mergers & Acquisitions at any of the shows. You can also pre-order it (very soon) from Suburban Home.
Mandolin Orange will hold a cd release party September 24, 2011 at Cat’s Cradle in Carrboro, NC for their new double release Haste Make/Hard Hearted Stranger. For more information check out their facebook page.
Okay, this is it for today because while I have piles of stuff, I have no more time.

Well I got this guitar and I learned how to make it talk…
So very glad it is Friday. I’m out of coffee (well, I will be once the pot is empty) but Kahuna promised to bring some home after work. Still working on a mod review. I wanted to have it done by this morning but I keep having to go back into the game to verify a name or point. I am thinking maybe Monday since I have some other things on schedule for this weekend.
Listening to Runaway from Samantha Fish while I work this morning. I am still in a guitar mood so I keep switching between Down in the Swamp and Runaway. I also might be listening to her Tom Petty cover, Lousiana Rain, more than is strictly neccessary.
My coffee cup is empty…be right back.
Okay, much much better.
If you all aren’t already listening you should check out ninebullets radio hosted by Bryan Childs. The show is on every Thursday from 10 to 11 pm ET. During last night’s show I found a new band to check out and heard NEW Have Gun Will Travel.
We got the ‘Bit her own guitar. We have enough acoustics around the house that there wasn’t really a point in buying her one if it was just a passing phase but she has really been serious about practicing. She needed something smaller than the usual dreadnought since she will be carrying it back and forth for music class. She also needed something well made enough to hold in tune without being so expensive we couldn’t replace if it got stolen or broken. We looked at several guitars and finally chose a Luna Safari Muse.
It is not a bad little guitar. It doesn’t have the deep tone of a dreadnought (or even of my Martin) but does have a decent sound and it is all solid wood so it will open up a little as the ‘Bit plays and it ages. It also won’t be quite as heavy to carry back and forth to school. We still need to get her a case as the one it came with is not padded. Not sure whether to get her a hardshell for the protection or a padded gig bag since it won’t add as much weight.
Okay, I have put off my mod article long enough. Have a good weekend.

I have been trying to write the review for Blurred, by San Francisco singer/songwriter Alex Wise for a few months now but can’t seem to finish it. This is difficult for me to say but I get about halfway through the process and find myself so homesick I just can’t continue. The past few years have been full [...]
Now that Scooter is back sleeping nights I proclaim this ’dig myself out from under the mountain of un-reviewed music‘ week. Kicking off the week o’reviewing is Arc & Stones, the debut EP from Brooklyn band Arc & Stones. The guys are Dan Pellarin (vocals), Ben Cramer (guitar), Joe Doino (drums) and Eddy Bayes (bass). I had [...]
So, I was in the mood for some blues and whoosh – blues appeared. Other people get coupons, bills and news updates in the mail while I get blues music. Cool new blues music in the form of the debut release Telegraph Taboo from the Chicago-based band Nick and the Ovorols. This is not a pretty album. The vocals on a few tracks [...]
