This is my Best Music Of 2012 list…

There were so many amazing albums and so much mind-blowingly great music released in 2012 that it was almost impossible to chose a best of list. At one point in my compiling I had to delete my list and start over because I had almost nothing but blues releases and I wanted the list to showcase several music genres, not just one.

Here are my ‘Best of’ lists for 2012 – mostly in order although the farther down on the list, the harder it was to sort and place the music. I tried to stay with ten selections for each but I got a little carried away with the best videos.

Corey Koehler, Savages, The Wild Suns, Caleb Caudle and The Bohannons

- All the leftover stuff -

When compiling my list,  I purposefully left out some really good mainstream music. Partly because of resources (we know Springsteen has more money to work with than American Aquarium) and partly because the mainstream albums and videos get all the broadcast and radio play they could possibly need.  I wanted to spotlight bands that are making exceptional music, but receive little (or no) air play.

However, here are a few albums I wanted to highlight before I end my list, mainly because the artists put out great music that I kept playing long after the album or video release.

Bruce Springsteen – Wrecking Ball – great video for ‘We Take Care of Our Own’,

Soundgarden – ‘Live to Rise’ – I can’t stop playing the song and watching the video so I put it up in the featured section for New Years Eve,

Don Williams – And So It Goes – it’s been too long since Don put out an album and this one was so good,

Ry Cooder – Election Special – Well, it’s Ry Cooder…duh.

Oh wow…I am finally done. While I go collapse on the floor you all can check out my choices and if you want, drop a note in the comment section with your thoughts or picks for best music of 2012.

It’s better if I tell you so…

Why is it Texas Pete if it is made in North Carolina? Shouldn’t it be North Carolina Pete?

Anyway…

All new music in the sidebar with tracks from Lee Bains III and the Glory Fires, Jennifer Leonhardt, Viv and the Revival, Goldenboy, The Lumineers and Anthony Gomes. I also have new tracks from Jo Wymer,

Jo Wymer – Rearview Mirror

the Black Roses

and Charlie Spraggs.

Up in the featured vid spot, check out Drunkard’s Epiphany from Johnny Hickman off his new album, Tilting. If you pull the blog on feed you can check out the vid here on you tube.

Finally, via the awesome guys from Woody’s Music, enjoy the beautiful harmonies of The Staves.

Tilting…

I have been listening to the upcoming Johnny Hickman (Cracker, Hickman-Dalton Gang) release Tilting and I am still not sure if I am more excited by how great the album is or by the fact that Cary Morin played pedal steel on it.

There are so many awesome tracks on this it is hard to know where to start.

My favorites are Resurrection Train, with its cool blues harp, the beautiful guitars on Destiny Misspent, and Not Enough, a social and political protest song disguised as a honky tonk tune.

(Jackson Browne had a song out a few years back called ‘The Drums of War’ and while the songs don’t sound anything alike they both convey the same ‘in your face’ feel.)

Hands down the best song on the album is Whittled Down.  And no, not just because I have a thing for songs about being ‘on the road’ but also because it is sad and painful and so very gorgeous.

The nights make you restless the days make you numb

The memories that tear you in half when they come

So you push them back down with your words and your chords

Down those free drinks drag your gear out the door…”

I also like the title track, Measure of a Man. You all can listen to it below and if you like it you can pop over to Johnny’s page on Reverbnation and download a free copy.

Okay, I’m all ‘yes, this is a cool set of sounds…go…preorder…buy…have fun’ but as always you guys need to listen to the music and decide for yourselves.

You all can click here to preview the rest of Tilting over on Amazon.

Check out the first vid from the album here or on you tube –

Tilting releases tomorrow, July 3, 2012. You can find Johnny on his website or over on his Facebook page.

One final thing – If you like the album enough to want it, please BUY it from Hickman’s website, iTunes, Amazon or other reputable retailers. Some jerk has already bootlegged the album and I don’t have enough words to describe how uncool that is. If you -need- the album but don’t have the money go d/l the free track, then pick up the rest of the songs over time from amazon at a buck a pop. Hickman is a working musician and like most of the bands I review and play on the blog he is not backed by one of the mega-recording companies. He has bills to pay and food to buy just like all of us and when you snag that bootleg copy you are stealing from Hickman, not some faceless corporation.

The Week in Music Blogs – June 23 to June 29, 2012

Tony Conley from Rock Guitar Daily reviewed Tilting, the upcoming (and really good) release from Johnny Hickman.

Josh Hathaway over on Blinded by Sound reviewed the new Norah Jones album, Little Broken Hearts and tossed a stream of the album up for listening.

Delarue from New York Music Daily reviewed the Haley Bowery and the Manimals/Hannah vs the Many concert at Webster Hall.

At Screamer Magazine, Richard Rosenthal interviewed Ron Young from Little Caesar.

Heading south to ninebullets.net territory, Romoesidvicious reviewed Nah, Death Ima Comin’ for You, the upcoming release from Michael Dean Damron, and streamed a preview track from the album. While you all are over there, check out the ninebullets radio show from this week. The show had tunes from Have Gun Will Travel, William Elliot Whitmore, Pawn Shop Saints and so many more good bands.

Rachel over at Adobe and Teardrops wrapped up Pride Month with her review of White Noise, the new EP from Sarah Walk. She also shared a link to download the EP for free or for a donation amount of your choice.

Also from the Adobe and Teardrops Facebook page, some Gary Clark, Jr.- Live from Bonnaroo -

Little Indie Blogs reviewed and provided a link to preview four songs from the Chapel Club upcoming release, Good Together.

The Steve Carlson / Jonah Dolan StageIt concert that had to be cancelled has been rescheduled for July 11th. Tickets are sold out now, but they usually release another bunch closer to show date.

Cameron Matthews over at Spinner previewed Hey Girl, a new single from Dig. Sow. Love. Grow., the upcoming (August 7th) album by the Buffalo Killers and offered it up as a free download.

Fire by Viv and the Revival is being used by NBC and Bud Light in their summer Olympics ads and promo spots.  You all can see the first video on the band’s website and catch more over the next month.

The Young Electrics only need a couple more votes and they will be performing at the Olympics as part of the Emerging Icons. Pop over and click on the little star to help them. Seriously, how many times are you going to have the chance to say, “I picked one of the bands that played the Olympics“?

To finish out the list, bluesman Peter Parcek tossed out another in his series, Unsung Heroes of the Blues Guitar. This entry focused on Kid Ramos.

And that is it for me. As always, if I missed your blog post just leave a comment with the addy or shoot me a quick email.

I’ll leave you all with a cool little live vid of Peter with Willie Hayes, Jesse Hayes and Kevin Harvey doing Let The Good Times Roll.

The Week in Music…Blogs – March 10 to March 16, 2012

Nichtmehrclaire at Ears to the Ground interviewed ME and shared a couple of the band’s videos.

Ann Powers from The Record on NPR tossed up the recording of Bruce Springsteen’s opening speech for SXSW. She also included several vids of the songs and bands he mentioned in his speech.

On his blog open mic oddyssey, Cary Morin wrote about his show in North Carolina and his trip to Colorado to do some recording:

On the 14th of March I went to Loveland Colorado to spend some time with Jason Larson and Johnny Hickman at Backbone Studio. I have been wanting to record an entire project at that studio but the opportunity has not come up yet. Jason used to play guitar for the Atoll and is now the main engineer at Backbone. He has been a great friend over the years and it’s always fun to work with him…”

ReverbNation released a set of Facebook Apps for musicians to use on the new Timeline layout.

From the new Otis Gibbs video to the somewhat controversial Lucero review all the way to the ninebullets radio show, Ninebullets.net spent the entire week pretty much vibrating with music cool.

Peter Parcek made me oh-so very happy by doing another entry in his Unsung Heroes of the Blues Guitar series. This week he profiled Harvey Mandel.

After seeing last week’s Unsung Heroes entry on Clarence Hollimon, Linda Leinen from The Task at Hand sent me a link to a great Hollimon performance from the 1993 Blues Blast for The Phoenix Blues Society.

As always, if I missed your music post please toss me an email or leave your blog addy in the comment section and I’ll put your link in the post.

  • Blurred…
    February 12, 2013 | 4:06 pm

I have been trying to write the review for Blurred, by San Francisco singer/songwriter Alex Wise for a few months now but can’t seem to finish it. This is difficult for me to say but I get about halfway through the process and find myself so homesick I just can’t continue. The past few years have been full [...]

  • Arc & Stones…
    February 11, 2013 | 4:53 am

Now that Scooter is back sleeping nights I proclaim this ’dig myself out from under the mountain of un-reviewed music‘ week. Kicking off the week o’reviewing is Arc & Stones, the debut EP from Brooklyn band Arc & Stones. The guys are Dan Pellarin (vocals), Ben Cramer (guitar), Joe Doino (drums) and Eddy Bayes (bass).  I had [...]

  • Telegraph Taboo…
    January 21, 2013 | 8:45 am

So, I was in the mood for some blues and whoosh – blues appeared. Other people get coupons, bills and news updates in the mail while I get blues music. Cool new blues music in the form of the debut release Telegraph Taboo from the Chicago-based band Nick and the Ovorols. This is not a pretty album. The vocals on a few tracks [...]
