The Week in Music…Blogs – Jan 12, 2013 to Jan 18, 2013

Everyone has snow…except us. Apparently, through the force of my will alone, I have created the only snow-free zone in the southeast.

Bman’s Blues Report had a nice article on the upcoming 3rd Annual Clarksdale Film Festival. If you all get a chance to go, check out Cat Head while you are roaming around town.

Little Indie Blogs previewed the new single ‘Portrait‘ from singer Josephine Oniyama and shared her touring schedule for the next couple of months.

Many years ago when the ‘Bit was still a tiny bit, Kahuna and I lived in Florence, Al for a while. Florence is a cool place to live – big blues festival in the summer, great downtown and some of the neatest kid parks I have ever seen. It is also just across the river from Muscle Shoals, Sheffield and Tuscumbia. Together they form what locals refer to as “The Shoals”.

This is also the place where four session players (Barry Beckett, Roger Hawkins, David Hood and Jimmy Johnson) bought a recording studio in 1969 and created the distinctive Muscle Shoals Sound. The documentary Muscle Shoals premiered at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival. Below is the trailer for the movie.

Autopsy IV from Ninebullets.net put out another awesome radio show Thursday night. I have been trying to find a Dorado track to put in the jukebox so it was nice to hear them in the show. He also had tracks from Drag the River (yay!) and The Heavy Horses as well as a new release from Shooter Jennings. Pop over to Ninebullets and check out the track list, then follow the link to listen to the recording of the show. Bryan shared the news on his Facebook that the Ninebullets Radio Show will be moving to Saturdays 2-4pm in Feb. (This adds an hour more of music to the show!)

Okay, must have more coffee and a biscuit. As always, if you have a music post or news you want just drop a comment below or send me an email to guitarkit at gmail.com and I’ll put your link in the post.

The Week in Music…Blogs – Dec 29, 2012 to Jan 4, 2013

Mostly Harmless with Dammit Damian tossed up his Top 10 of 2012 and added a podcast to the mix.

Farce the Music listed their top 75 albums of 2012.

Easy Street Records blogged about the closing of their Queen Anne (Seattle) area record store. (- thanks Penny)

Rune from Ninebullets.net listed his favorite albums of 2012 while AutopsyIV spun out another amazing Ninebullets Radio Broadcast.

Usually I link to articles written by bluesman Peter Parcek, but today the article is about him. Check out George Pelletier’s interview with Parcek for the Bedford Journal.

From the Music Maker Relief Foundation – check out this new video of Ben Payton playing Black Dog Blues:

Finally, from Noisetrade.com, Mason Jar Music presented The Storm is Passing Over – A Hurricane Sandy Benefit album from Mason Jar Music and Friends.

In the wake of Hurricane Sandy, Brooklyn-based collective Mason Jar Music has assembled an all-star collection of indie-folk artists to create The Storm is Passing Over, a benefit album of fifteen classic American storm songs. Donations exchanged for these recordings will go directly to support ongoing relief work in New York City and the tri-state area.”

Lots of great songs on this. I am partial to the Memphis Minnie and Joe McCoy version of ‘When the Levee Breaks’ but Micheal Daves does a nice job on his rendition. ‘The Storms are on the Ocean’ by Aoife O’Donovan is beautiful and probably my favorite of the group. I also love ‘Lonesome River’ by Roseanne Cash (love, love her arrangment on this) and Tift Merritt’sSwing Low Sweet Chariot’.

The album is available to download for free but a tip jar has been set up on the webpage and all tips will go to Hurricane Sandy relief efforts.

That’s it for me this week. If you have a music blog or site and want to be added to the list above just drop me a note with your addy either in the comment section below or in an email to guitarkit at gmail.com and I will pop your entry into the post.

Through the smoke and fire…

I missed Ninebullets Radio last night which is a shame because Bryan put together a stellar line-up of artists and then attempted (or so I assume) to blow the roof off the radio station. Since I missed it live I am listening to the recorded version.

If you all want to join me you can catch the archived show on Ninebullets.net .

Just check out the playlist:

01. Otis Gibbs – Crap For Christmas (Once I Dreamed Of Christmas) 02. The Black Keys – Thick Freakness (Thickfreakness) 03. Left Lane Cruiser – Big Mama (Bring Yo Ass To The Table) 04. The Legendary Shack Shakers – County Of Graves (Believe) 05. Those Crosstown Rivals – Kentucky Woman (TCR/Arliss Split 7?) 06. The Whipsaws – Jessi Jane (60 Watt Ave) 07. Arliss Nancy – Both Got Old (TCR/Arliss Split 7?) 08. Frank Turner – The Road (Last Minutes & Lost Evenings) 09. The White Buffalo – The Pilot (Once Upon A Time In The West) 10. Drag The River – History with History (unreleased) 11. Have Gun Will Travel – To The Victor Go The Spoils (Mergers & Acquisitions) 12. Doc Dailey & Magnolia Devil – She Has Her Moments (Catch The Presidents) 13. Possum Jenkins – Greasy Spoon (On Time) 14. JKutchma & The Five Fifths – Used To Believe (Pastorals) 15. Chris Knight – In the Mean Time (Little Victories) 16. Scott H. Biram – Judgement Day (Something’s Wrong/Lost Forever)

Seriously good show. Four or five of these are on my best of 2012 list but the entire line-up is just awesome.

For those of you that pull the blog on feed, Routed Tree is the video up in the featured spot  and it’s from my favorite Brighton guys, Gypsy and the Wolf.

If you like the track they have it free for download over on Soundcloud.

This is my new desktop background -

Before everyone gets overcome with jealousy, there are several wallpapers and some new shots from Ironman 3 over on the Marvel website so you all can have your own Tony Stark/Ironman background.

Well, I’m on the last track of the show (appropriately titled Judgement Day-grin) and need to run. Have a good weekend!

Cause my baby done run off to Tampa Bay…

My office needs a door…that can be locked…and then barred with a big railroad tie.

Well I got nine bullets…

My ninebullets radio sticker came in the mail today!!!

I haven’t put it up anywhere permanently since I was going to stick it on my gig bag but decided I want it in the office instead. Now if they would just make a ninebullets radio coffee cup.

I have shiny new Patterson Hood up in the sidebar jukebox today!

Check out “Come Back Little Star” a preview track from his upcoming album Heat Lightning Rumbles in the Distance. I love the piano on this track – it is so very pretty. You can download your own copy from the link below -

I got my key for the City of Steam preview yesterday so I will be MMO’ing this weekend.

Huh, I ran out of exclamation points. Anyway…the plan is to game test City of Steam and finish my Dawnguard review. Possibly also toss the girls in the pool if the weather will cooperate.

This is Carol – her interests include pounding evil into a bloody pulp, flying (in and out of jets) and coffee…

I picked up the new Captain Marvel # 1 this morning. The Marvel Captain Marvel with Carol Danvers, not the DC Captain Marvel.

I love the new costume. The hair – the gloves – the everything.

(And seriously dudes, it isn’t like there is a shortage of thigh-high boots in the comic ‘verse. Trust me, you all will survive the trama of one super chick in pants.)

You can pick up Captain Marvel #1 at your local comic shop or order it online. I picked my copy up and pre-ordered the next three issues over on Things From Another World.

The Week in Music Blogs – June 23 to June 29, 2012

Tony Conley from Rock Guitar Daily reviewed Tilting, the upcoming (and really good) release from Johnny Hickman.

Josh Hathaway over on Blinded by Sound reviewed the new Norah Jones album, Little Broken Hearts and tossed a stream of the album up for listening.

Delarue from New York Music Daily reviewed the Haley Bowery and the Manimals/Hannah vs the Many concert at Webster Hall.

At Screamer Magazine, Richard Rosenthal interviewed Ron Young from Little Caesar.

Heading south to ninebullets.net territory, Romoesidvicious reviewed Nah, Death Ima Comin’ for You, the upcoming release from Michael Dean Damron, and streamed a preview track from the album. While you all are over there, check out the ninebullets radio show from this week. The show had tunes from Have Gun Will Travel, William Elliot Whitmore, Pawn Shop Saints and so many more good bands.

Rachel over at Adobe and Teardrops wrapped up Pride Month with her review of White Noise, the new EP from Sarah Walk. She also shared a link to download the EP for free or for a donation amount of your choice.

Also from the Adobe and Teardrops Facebook page, some Gary Clark, Jr.- Live from Bonnaroo -

Little Indie Blogs reviewed and provided a link to preview four songs from the Chapel Club upcoming release, Good Together.

The Steve Carlson / Jonah Dolan StageIt concert that had to be cancelled has been rescheduled for July 11th. Tickets are sold out now, but they usually release another bunch closer to show date.

Cameron Matthews over at Spinner previewed Hey Girl, a new single from Dig. Sow. Love. Grow., the upcoming (August 7th) album by the Buffalo Killers and offered it up as a free download.

Fire by Viv and the Revival is being used by NBC and Bud Light in their summer Olympics ads and promo spots.  You all can see the first video on the band’s website and catch more over the next month.

The Young Electrics only need a couple more votes and they will be performing at the Olympics as part of the Emerging Icons. Pop over and click on the little star to help them. Seriously, how many times are you going to have the chance to say, “I picked one of the bands that played the Olympics“?

To finish out the list, bluesman Peter Parcek tossed out another in his series, Unsung Heroes of the Blues Guitar. This entry focused on Kid Ramos.

And that is it for me. As always, if I missed your blog post just leave a comment with the addy or shoot me a quick email.

I’ll leave you all with a cool little live vid of Peter with Willie Hayes, Jesse Hayes and Kevin Harvey doing Let The Good Times Roll.

Waiting on a rocket to Mars…

Ack…so so much to do today. This is going to be more like a fly-by than a post but here goes.

The Fender Music Foundation is hosting a benefit concert on StageIT -

the event will take place on Thursday, April 26, between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. Pacific Standard Time. Proceeds to The Fender Music Foundation will support the organization’s mission to provide musical instruments to music programs in need across the United States. Both signed and unsigned musicians are invited to participate to receive exposure and prizes (including a year’s supply of Heineken) in appreciation for their support of music education…”

AutopsyIV from Ninebullets.net and the awesome Ninebullets radio show needs our help.

It’s marathon time for WMNF and Ninebullets Radio and that means I am asking y’all to show a little support for the radio show. I am being asked to raise 1600 dollars tomorrow night and I’d love to get a head start on it. So, if you like the music I play, like that there is a show on the air that plays these bands, appreciate the work that goes into getting unreleased songs for the show, appreciate that there is a radio station that let’s someone like me on the air…..whatever the reason. Maybe you’re a band we play on the show or we’ve supported via Kickstarter over the last couple of years….whatever it is….Ninebullets Radio needs your support during this funds drive…”

36 days to go in Cassie Taylor’s Kickstarter project -

My name is Cassie Taylor and I’m a 25 year old singer/songwriter/foot stomping/blues women with a post college budget. Yes, I have had  extraordinary opportunities to tour around the world, played with first class musicians, I serve on Board of Directors of the Blues Foundation, walked the red carpet in LA,  and meet all sorts of wonderful friends and fans in the process. I am a full time, hustlin’ musician but unfortunately that dosn’t always amount to cash flow…”

Okay, running now.

The Week in Music…Blogs – March 10 to March 16, 2012

Nichtmehrclaire at Ears to the Ground interviewed ME and shared a couple of the band’s videos.

Ann Powers from The Record on NPR tossed up the recording of Bruce Springsteen’s opening speech for SXSW. She also included several vids of the songs and bands he mentioned in his speech.

On his blog open mic oddyssey, Cary Morin wrote about his show in North Carolina and his trip to Colorado to do some recording:

On the 14th of March I went to Loveland Colorado to spend some time with Jason Larson and Johnny Hickman at Backbone Studio. I have been wanting to record an entire project at that studio but the opportunity has not come up yet. Jason used to play guitar for the Atoll and is now the main engineer at Backbone. He has been a great friend over the years and it’s always fun to work with him…”

ReverbNation released a set of Facebook Apps for musicians to use on the new Timeline layout.

From the new Otis Gibbs video to the somewhat controversial Lucero review all the way to the ninebullets radio show, Ninebullets.net spent the entire week pretty much vibrating with music cool.

Peter Parcek made me oh-so very happy by doing another entry in his Unsung Heroes of the Blues Guitar series. This week he profiled Harvey Mandel.

After seeing last week’s Unsung Heroes entry on Clarence Hollimon, Linda Leinen from The Task at Hand sent me a link to a great Hollimon performance from the 1993 Blues Blast for The Phoenix Blues Society.

As always, if I missed your music post please toss me an email or leave your blog addy in the comment section and I’ll put your link in the post.

The Week in Music…Blogs – Jan 21 to Jan 27, 2012

Early last week Bryan Childs from ninebullets.net wrote a blog entry called Pimping Other People’s Podcasts. It was sort of a ‘we all love doing this, let’s help each other out’ thing.

So I decided to post links to some of the great music blogs and media I read this week, sort of like a week in music recap only with less Kurt Loder and more check out this band review.

And here we go:

Michael Barwise interviewed Dylan Williams of The Carpels.

The Carpels were finally able to get the video for their new single, ‘Bears‘ viewable in the US.

Rachel over on Adobe and Teardrops (such a cool blog name) reviewed The Creak and provided a link to download their free album Fool’s Gold.

Autopsy4 previewed a single off the new Arliss Nancy in a blog entry and then previewed another during the Thursday night ninebullets radio show.

Iaan Hughes waxed poetic about Harley Allen over on his blog, the Real Mr. Heartache.

Jake Smith filming in Death Valley

Jake Smith (The White Buffalo) was in Death Valley last week filming a video for his upcoming release, Once Upon a Time in the West and was nice enough to share this image from the shoot.

I ranted about integrity and responsibility in music journalism after reading some reviews of We Take Care of Our Own, the first track from Springsteen’s upcoming release, Wrecking Ball.

Damien interviewed Virgil Dickerson and previewed a track from the upcoming Arliss Nancy release, Simple Machines on his Mostly Harmless podcast.

Yes, yes I do have a ‘thing’ for Arliss Nancy.  Why do people keep asking me that?

Finally, this is a very small sample of all the awesome music news posted this week. If you tossed up a music post or review on your blog this week you would like added to the list just drop me a note with your addy in the comment section and I’ll put your link up in the post.

Now go read the cool blogs. ;)

  • Blurred…
    February 12, 2013 | 4:06 pm

I have been trying to write the review for Blurred, by San Francisco singer/songwriter Alex Wise for a few months now but can’t seem to finish it. This is difficult for me to say but I get about halfway through the process and find myself so homesick I just can’t continue. The past few years have been full [...]

  • Arc & Stones…
    February 11, 2013 | 4:53 am

Now that Scooter is back sleeping nights I proclaim this ’dig myself out from under the mountain of un-reviewed music‘ week. Kicking off the week o’reviewing is Arc & Stones, the debut EP from Brooklyn band Arc & Stones. The guys are Dan Pellarin (vocals), Ben Cramer (guitar), Joe Doino (drums) and Eddy Bayes (bass).  I had [...]

  • Telegraph Taboo…
    January 21, 2013 | 8:45 am

So, I was in the mood for some blues and whoosh – blues appeared. Other people get coupons, bills and news updates in the mail while I get blues music. Cool new blues music in the form of the debut release Telegraph Taboo from the Chicago-based band Nick and the Ovorols. This is not a pretty album. The vocals on a few tracks [...]
