The Week in Music…Blogs – July 21 to July 27, 2012

I pretend this is moment Jimmy read my tweet.

Last night I watched the StageIt concert with Jimmy Buffett and it was so very cool.

The StageIt crew (along with Evan Lowenstein) set up in Jimmy’s dressing room at Comerica Park in Detroit.

Mike Utley hung out and Matt Hoggatt showed up to sing one of his songs.

Jimmy sang Tin Cup Chalice and Boat Drinks. He also read tweets aloud as they went by and now everyone watching knows I was eating soup right before the show.

( I didn’t know Jimmy would see the pre-show tweets or I would have, you know, sent something clever or cool…or just not weird)

The show was a lot of fun and Jimmy raised over 20,000 for charity. Yea!

Cameron Matthews over at Spinner previewed Hey Girl, a new single from Dig. Sow. Love. Grow., the upcoming (August 7th) album by the Buffalo Killers and offered it up as a free download.

Fire by Viv and the Revival is being used by NBC and Bud Light in their summer Olympics ads and promo spots.  You all can see the first video on the band’s website and catch more over the next month.

The Young Electrics only need a couple more votes and they will be performing at the Olympics as part of the Emerging Icons. Pop over and click on the little star to help them. Seriously, how many times are you going to have the chance to say, “I picked one of the bands that played the Olympics“?

To finish out the list, bluesman Peter Parcek tossed out another in his series, Unsung Heroes of the Blues Guitar. This entry focused on Kid Ramos.

And that is it for me. As always, if I missed your blog post just leave a comment with the addy or shoot me a quick email.

I’ll leave you all with a cool little live vid of Peter with Willie Hayes, Jesse Hayes and Kevin Harvey doing Let The Good Times Roll.

Dreamin’ wide awake…

We are back from our holiday trip to Alabama and I may actually finish the unpacking by tomorrow.  Yeah me.  Anyway, we ate lots of holiday food and saw loads of family. There was porch-swinging and football-watching.  The rumors that Dad-in-Law and I yelled rude things at LSU when they beat Arkansas are vicious lies.  Really.  Not that it matters since the only bowl game that means anything ( IRONBOWL!!! ) was played on Saturday and my team WON!!!

Ahem…

We made it home early Sunday morning so I was able to watch the Steve Carlson concert on StageIT later that evening.  This is the third stageit show I seen with Steve so I am not exactly unbiased in my review. Even so, it was still awesome.  Jonah Dolan joined him for the show and played various drums while Steve played guitar and sang.  Steve opened with Pinata Novia, which has slowly become my favorite Steve Carlson song and also played Days Behind from the new-ish album.  I wish he would play Break Me but maybe it doesn’t transition well to acoustic.

There was some discussion in the chat stream about his shirt being mostly unbuttoned until everyone remembered his mom was on chat and then we were all embarrassed to be discussing his chest in front of his mom.  He would never have known except Danneel Harris told on us and he hurridly buttoned a couple of buttons and after a few sighs the chat swung back to discussing music.

He did a great job covering Clapton’s Wonderful Tonight and then I am embarrassed to say I don’t even know what the last song played was because Jonah moved to play the keyboard, Steve picked up his mandolin and Jensen Ackles pulled up a chair behind them and joined in on guitar and MY BRAIN BROKE.  I was pretty much worthless after that.

So basically the concert was awesome and once again I wonder why can’t Steve stand in my sunroom and play guitar all day?

I went to another StageIT concert last night.  I hadn’t planned to see another show so soon but the link to a vid by The White Buffalo came across my twitter feed and while the video was okay the sound was just amazing. Jake Smith has this gorgeous, powerful voice and I was so impressed I popped over to stageit and bought my ticket as soon as the video ended.

Jake was set up in a studio so the sound was very clear.  This was my first time to hear any of his music and I was just blown away.  He opened with Into the Sun and followed with Wrong, which has some great guitar sections. I think the next song was One Long Lone Night with the poetic line, “dreamin’ wide awake”, followed by a rowdy drinking-type song. Then he played Everynight, Everyday from his upcoming EP and the beautiful Love Song #1 he wrote for his wife.

Yes, you all can pause for a quick “awwww, how sweet” before we move on.

I am not sure what the next two songs were called but they were good. He ended the show with Pilot, which I liked and everyone else went wild over.  The show finished up and I just sat there because a) it was an amazing show and b) why didn’t anyone TELL ME about him?

Jake’s new EP, The Lost and Found comes out on December 6th and in the interest of full disclosure I have to mention I WON a signed copy of the new EP after the show!!  Once it gets here I will review it for you guys, after you know, I stop dancing around gleefully.

You can find Jake on his website  where you can also download a free mp3 of Pilot or over on his facebook page.

Southward as you go…

So Rockstar Games wants to sell me and all of you a 10″ Max Payne doll…Okay, okay, they call it a statue. It is part of the Max Payne 3 Special Edition release.

We are headed to Alabama this afternoon to spend the week of Thanksgiving with family. For the Eagles fans among you I have mentioned before that Kahuna’s aunt and uncle live on the actual Seven Bridges Road.  We will be staying at our old house and hoping the nice weather holds so we don’t freeze while we are there.

Steve Carlson is doing another StageIt concert this Sunday, November 27th. At present the time is 5pm EST so I am not whether I can go or not.  It depends on when we get in from the trip. I’ll stick the info in the top box a little later today.

Ninebullets.net premiered the new Have Gun Will Travel video, Thirteen Miles to Empty, on their website a few days ago.  So I snagged it. Mergers and Acquisitions is one of about five new releases I am taking with me on the trip.

If Fogo de Chao really wanted me to eat at their restaurant they would build one in Raleigh.

I will get through all the rest of the email and such today and watch the vid Shoreacres from The Task at Hand sent me. After I have another cup of coffee…and pack.

  • Blurred…
    February 12, 2013 | 4:06 pm

I have been trying to write the review for Blurred, by San Francisco singer/songwriter Alex Wise for a few months now but can’t seem to finish it. This is difficult for me to say but I get about halfway through the process and find myself so homesick I just can’t continue. The past few years have been full [...]

Now that Scooter is back sleeping nights I proclaim this ’dig myself out from under the mountain of un-reviewed music‘ week. Kicking off the week o’reviewing is Arc & Stones, the debut EP from Brooklyn band Arc & Stones. The guys are Dan Pellarin (vocals), Ben Cramer (guitar), Joe Doino (drums) and Eddy Bayes (bass).  I had [...]

  • Telegraph Taboo…
    January 21, 2013 | 8:45 am

So, I was in the mood for some blues and whoosh – blues appeared. Other people get coupons, bills and news updates in the mail while I get blues music. Cool new blues music in the form of the debut release Telegraph Taboo from the Chicago-based band Nick and the Ovorols. This is not a pretty album. The vocals on a few tracks [...]
