This is my Best Music Of 2012 list…

There were so many amazing albums and so much mind-blowingly great music released in 2012 that it was almost impossible to chose a best of list. At one point in my compiling I had to delete my list and start over because I had almost nothing but blues releases and I wanted the list to showcase several music genres, not just one.

Here are my ‘Best of’ lists for 2012 – mostly in order although the farther down on the list, the harder it was to sort and place the music. I tried to stay with ten selections for each but I got a little carried away with the best videos.

- Favorite Albums of 2012 -

Once Upon a Time in the West – The White Buffalo

My Favorite Album of 2012

Burn Flicker Die – American Aquarium

There’s a Bomb in Gilead – Lee Bains III and the Glory Fires

Driving Towards the Daylight – Joe Bonamassa

Tomorrowland – Ryan Bingham

Handwritten – Gaslight Anthem

Seven – Viv and the Revival

Let It Burn – Ruthie Foster

Up 2 Zero – Anthony Gomes

One Damn Heart – The Debonzo Brothers

- Favorite Songs of 2012 -

Don’t Let Me Get Lonely – The Record Company

One Lone Night – The White Buffalo

So James Dean – Viv and the Revival

Whittled Down – Johnny Hickman

Driving Towards the Daylight – Joe Bonamassa

Burn Flicker Die – American Aquarium

Here We Go - Roisin O

Break My Heart Tonight – The Debonzo Brothers

45 – Gaslight Anthem

Baptized – Buffalo Killers

- Favorite EP’s of 2012 -

All Things Blue – Ophelia Cache

Superdead – The Record Company

I Am Here – Savages

Signal – The Amends

- Favorite Videos of 2012 -

Wish it Was True – The White Buffalo

Angeles – Steve Carlson and Jensen Ackles

Another Road - Johnny Hickman

Mark My Words – The Coronas

No Surprise - Miss Shevaughn and Yuma Wray

To Live is To Fly – Ryan Bingham

Made to Break – Otis Gibbs

Welcome To A Good Time – Viv and the Revival

I’ll Wait – Charlie Spraggs

Break My Heart Tonight – The Debonzo Brothers

Haunted – Cassie Taylor

- Favorite New (to me) Artists/Bands -

The Baron Sisters, Haley Bowery and the Manimals, Jean Caffeine,

Corey Koehler, Savages, The Wild Suns, Caleb Caudle and The Bohannons

- All the leftover stuff -

When compiling my list,  I purposefully left out some really good mainstream music. Partly because of resources (we know Springsteen has more money to work with than American Aquarium) and partly because the mainstream albums and videos get all the broadcast and radio play they could possibly need.  I wanted to spotlight bands that are making exceptional music, but receive little (or no) air play.

However, here are a few albums I wanted to highlight before I end my list, mainly because the artists put out great music that I kept playing long after the album or video release.

Bruce Springsteen – Wrecking Ball – great video for ‘We Take Care of Our Own’,

Soundgarden – ‘Live to Rise’ – I can’t stop playing the song and watching the video so I put it up in the featured section for New Years Eve,

Don Williams – And So It Goes – it’s been too long since Don put out an album and this one was so good,

Ry Cooder – Election Special – Well, it’s Ry Cooder…duh.

Oh wow…I am finally done. While I go collapse on the floor you all can check out my choices and if you want, drop a note in the comment section with your thoughts or picks for best music of 2012.

Kit’s Awesome Vid of the Day

Angeles – Steve Carlson and Jensen Ackles

Beautiful cover of Elliott Smith’s Angeles. From Steve’s shiny new album, Sharing the Covers.

I want to ride my bicycle…

I felt really blah yesterday so Scooter and I spent the day playing Hearthfire, the new DLC for Skyrim. We mined ore, planted herbs and forged too many nails to count. At the end of the day we both felt better and we had a shiny new in-game house, a moose named Barnaby and a couple of chickens. Yes, chickens.

Check out my full review of Hearthfire over on GamingHUD.

New music out this month from Ryan Bingham, Patterson Hood, Animal Collective, the Avett Brothers, The Killers and lots more. I have lots of new music for the jukebox and a few reviews if Scooter will cooperate.

There are still a few tickets left for the StageIt – Steve Carlson concert later today.

Finally, rock on little Freddie bird.

Rovio and Angry Birds are proud supporters of the Mercury Phoenix Trust and Freddie For A Day on September 5th!”

The Week in Music Blogs – June 23 to June 29, 2012

Tony Conley from Rock Guitar Daily reviewed Tilting, the upcoming (and really good) release from Johnny Hickman.

Josh Hathaway over on Blinded by Sound reviewed the new Norah Jones album, Little Broken Hearts and tossed a stream of the album up for listening.

Delarue from New York Music Daily reviewed the Haley Bowery and the Manimals/Hannah vs the Many concert at Webster Hall.

At Screamer Magazine, Richard Rosenthal interviewed Ron Young from Little Caesar.

Heading south to ninebullets.net territory, Romoesidvicious reviewed Nah, Death Ima Comin’ for You, the upcoming release from Michael Dean Damron, and streamed a preview track from the album. While you all are over there, check out the ninebullets radio show from this week. The show had tunes from Have Gun Will Travel, William Elliot Whitmore, Pawn Shop Saints and so many more good bands.

Rachel over at Adobe and Teardrops wrapped up Pride Month with her review of White Noise, the new EP from Sarah Walk. She also shared a link to download the EP for free or for a donation amount of your choice.

Also from the Adobe and Teardrops Facebook page, some Gary Clark, Jr.- Live from Bonnaroo -

Little Indie Blogs reviewed and provided a link to preview four songs from the Chapel Club upcoming release, Good Together.

The Steve Carlson / Jonah Dolan StageIt concert that had to be cancelled has been rescheduled for July 11th. Tickets are sold out now, but they usually release another bunch closer to show date.

Cameron Matthews over at Spinner previewed Hey Girl, a new single from Dig. Sow. Love. Grow., the upcoming (August 7th) album by the Buffalo Killers and offered it up as a free download.

Fire by Viv and the Revival is being used by NBC and Bud Light in their summer Olympics ads and promo spots.  You all can see the first video on the band’s website and catch more over the next month.

The Young Electrics only need a couple more votes and they will be performing at the Olympics as part of the Emerging Icons. Pop over and click on the little star to help them. Seriously, how many times are you going to have the chance to say, “I picked one of the bands that played the Olympics“?

To finish out the list, bluesman Peter Parcek tossed out another in his series, Unsung Heroes of the Blues Guitar. This entry focused on Kid Ramos.

And that is it for me. As always, if I missed your blog post just leave a comment with the addy or shoot me a quick email.

I’ll leave you all with a cool little live vid of Peter with Willie Hayes, Jesse Hayes and Kevin Harvey doing Let The Good Times Roll.

The Week in Music…Blogs – June 2 to June 8, 2012

There are still a few tickets left for the Steve Carlson and Jonah Dolan concert on StageIt tonight.

I missed this when I did the post yesterday so I’m tucking it in before the blog list.  The Amends have their new EP, Signal up for two bucks on Bandcamp.

Monx from over on I Want 1000 Guitars reviewed Living with Scars by The Jo Wymer Band. I Want 1000 Guitars is also the home of Free Music Mondays so look around a little while you are there and pop some new stuff on your mp3 player.

Terry Gross from from NPR‘s Fresh Air interviewed Neil Young about Americana, the new album from Young and Crazy Horse.

Dora from Buzznet profiled the Young Electrics and streamed a track for listening. Jack Moore (Gypsy and the Wolf) is playing guitar for them (although not in the vid she has up).

Peter Parcek continues his Unsung Heroes of the Blues Guitar series with a piece on Andy Fairweather Low.

From Reader‘s Artist on Artist Johnny Burgin interviews Charlie Musselwhite.

Rachel from Adobe and Teardrops reviews Bear Creek from Brandi Carlile.

Debbie Davies is looking for some tremelo pedal recs. You can help her out on Twitter @DebDaviesBlues.

Gonna end this week with a video from the Americana Music Association Award Nominee Announcement, which was apparently a good excuse for lots of cool musicians to get on stage and play.  This is Robert Ellis (with a little help from Jim Lauderdale, Don Was, Buddy Miller, Don Heffington and Greg Leisz on the pedal steel) performing Westbound Train.

While the rest of the world keeps on passing me by…

Whoa…it’s like Monday…even though it isn’t.

I’m playing in the sneak preview of City of Steam on the 28th. Okay, okay…it’s more like I (and others) are bug hunting for free but what I’ve seen of the game so far looks pretty cool so I am excited it is about to start.

There are still a few tickets left for the Steve Carlson – Christian Kane StageIt show tomorrow night. About ten a day go up since the second sell-out so if you still need one try checking the page every few hours. As of 2:20pm est they have four listed.

My car is paid off! Yay!

Now my car wants a shiny new catalytic convertor. Sigh.

I am going through email so if you have sent me one recently I WILL get a reply out to you today. I just have to email my dad-in-law first.

When I was 18 it never once occurred to me that one day I would be sitting in a room dedicated to coffee (seriously) and telling the world at large that I am not sure what color hair my kid went to school with today. Life is…strange.

BTW the ‘Bit is enjoying her guitar class. She has two honors classes this semester and an advanced design class so Kahuna and I are glad she has guitar so she can catch her breath.

I am giving ‘mobile mudding’ a try for my next Mud review. We will see how it goes.

Okay, back to work on my review.

  • Blurred…
    February 12, 2013 | 4:06 pm

I have been trying to write the review for Blurred, by San Francisco singer/songwriter Alex Wise for a few months now but can’t seem to finish it. This is difficult for me to say but I get about halfway through the process and find myself so homesick I just can’t continue. The past few years have been full [...]

  • Arc & Stones…
    February 11, 2013 | 4:53 am

Now that Scooter is back sleeping nights I proclaim this ’dig myself out from under the mountain of un-reviewed music‘ week. Kicking off the week o’reviewing is Arc & Stones, the debut EP from Brooklyn band Arc & Stones. The guys are Dan Pellarin (vocals), Ben Cramer (guitar), Joe Doino (drums) and Eddy Bayes (bass).  I had [...]

  • Telegraph Taboo…
    January 21, 2013 | 8:45 am

So, I was in the mood for some blues and whoosh – blues appeared. Other people get coupons, bills and news updates in the mail while I get blues music. Cool new blues music in the form of the debut release Telegraph Taboo from the Chicago-based band Nick and the Ovorols. This is not a pretty album. The vocals on a few tracks [...]
