This is my Best Music Of 2012 list…

There were so many amazing albums and so much mind-blowingly great music released in 2012 that it was almost impossible to chose a best of list. At one point in my compiling I had to delete my list and start over because I had almost nothing but blues releases and I wanted the list to showcase several music genres, not just one.

Here are my ‘Best of’ lists for 2012 – mostly in order although the farther down on the list, the harder it was to sort and place the music. I tried to stay with ten selections for each but I got a little carried away with the best videos.

- All the leftover stuff -

When compiling my list,  I purposefully left out some really good mainstream music. Partly because of resources (we know Springsteen has more money to work with than American Aquarium) and partly because the mainstream albums and videos get all the broadcast and radio play they could possibly need.  I wanted to spotlight bands that are making exceptional music, but receive little (or no) air play.

However, here are a few albums I wanted to highlight before I end my list, mainly because the artists put out great music that I kept playing long after the album or video release.

Bruce Springsteen – Wrecking Ball – great video for ‘We Take Care of Our Own’,

Soundgarden – ‘Live to Rise’ – I can’t stop playing the song and watching the video so I put it up in the featured section for New Years Eve,

Don Williams – And So It Goes – it’s been too long since Don put out an album and this one was so good,

Ry Cooder – Election Special – Well, it’s Ry Cooder…duh.

Oh wow…I am finally done. While I go collapse on the floor you all can check out my choices and if you want, drop a note in the comment section with your thoughts or picks for best music of 2012.

The Week in Music…Blogs – June 9 to June 15, 2012

The list is a little short this week as I am packing for vacation and trying to get the reviews for next week written ahead of time.

Carrow from the Blue Walrus reviewed Closer to You by The (awesome) Coronas.

The Digital Fix interviewed Shade of Red on their debut EP Don’t Trust the Captain and streamed the track Mahatma Gandhi in Space.

Viv and the Revival released a new video from Seven-

Merlin Jobst interviewed Brendan Benson for The Line of Best Fit. They discussed Nashville, Benson’s new album What kind of World and his new label, Readymade Records.

John Allman from Ninebullets.net reviewed the new Bruce Springsteen album Wrecking Ball, while Autopsy IV convinced me to give the new Shooter Jennings release, Family Man, a listen.

New Alabama Shakes vid recorded live at Bonnaroo -

I took a walk on the punk side with a review of Born Strange, the debut album from Haley Bowery and the Manimals while Phil Allely from FameMagazine UK interviewed Haley on her music and the new album.

The Week in Music…Blogs – May 19 to May 25, 2012

Grab your mugs and pull up a seat. The coffee is hot and there is plenty of music to read and enjoy this morning. Sending out a quick Happy Birthday to both my baby brother and my dad-in-law.

Michalis Limnios from Blues.gr interviewed Debbie Davis about her new album, After the Fall.

Terry Mullins from Blues Blast interviewed Bob Margolin.

indieLondon tossed up their ‘singles of the week’ including music from Rumer (cool little cover song btw), and The Coronas.

Seba Rashii Culture reviewed Closer to You by The Coronas. I’m not going to argue since Addicted to Progress is a great song – but it isn’t the best track on the album. (that would be Write to MeThough it does have a nice video.

Getting her punk on, Laura Snapes from Pitchfork interviewed Savages.

And over on NPR Music, Joel Rose talks Ramones, Joey Ramone and music, both old and soon to be released.

That’s it for me this morning.  I have an omelet to finish and a pool to lounge (can lounge be a verb?) around. As always, if you have a music post on your blog you would like me to add to list please send me a quick email (guitarkit at gmail dot com) or toss a comment below the post with your addy and I’ll add you to the post.

I can feel a new Coronas video close to me…

Kit’s Awesome Vid of the Day – The Coronas – Mark My Words

I love the stage shots where the band looks like vector graphics, the lighting, the colors and how well the moving images are layered. The  video was directed by Simon Eustace and won Best Video at the Bray Music Video Festival.

Just say to me, that you love me…

The Coronas released their new album, Closer To You, this past November. It is awesome and you all should go buy it.

What? Okay, okay. That is brief, even for me.  Let’s try this again.

The Coronas, Danny O’Reilly on vocals and guitar, Graham Knox on bass, Conor Egan on drums, and Dave McPhillips on lead guitar, are an indie rock band out of Dublin with a knack for for taking basic themes like relationships and religion and adding in subtle layers of meaning. They have always written good songs but the tracks on Closer To You are some of their best so far.

My favorites are the beautiful and bittersweet Write to Me, the bouncy Addicted to Progress and What You Think You Know with its heavy rock drums and the closest the guys get to ‘screamin’ guitars’.

I also like Mark My Words, the next single set to release on February 3rd. It has a just a little of an ’80′s sound.

You can listen to all the tracks and purchase Closer To You from iTunes or Amazon. Catch The Coronas on their website, check out their facebook page or follow them on twitter @TheCoronas.

This is pretending to be a ‘Best of’ list for 2011…

2011 was an exceptional year for music and I am so happy I was able to listen to so much of it. I can’t do ‘Best of’ list since I just can’t chose which was the best but I do have a few favorites I want to toss out before the year is done.

- Favorite Albums -

Closer to You by The Coronas

Mergers and Aquisitions by Have Gun Will Travel

Keep Your Devils Around by American Scarecrows

Revelator by the Tedeschi Trucks Band

 - Favorite New (to me) Band(s) -

The Amends, Arliss Nancy and Gypsy and the Wolf

- Favorite New Singer(s) -

Jake Smith (aka The White Buffalo), Charlie Spraggs and Leslie Craig

- Favorite Song(s) -

Shook Up by Viv and the Revival, Wild Hearts by American Scarecrows and Break Me by Steve Carlson

Favorite Music Vid – This was so, so very hard to pick.

Also check out:

Here Comes the Sun by Steve Carlson

Good Man by Gypsy and the Wolf

All You Need is Now by Duran Duran

High points (music-blog-wise) for me in 2011 include Twitter (how did I live without for so long?), Daniel Logan and Jack Moore (again, how did I live without for so long), StageIt and Reverbnation, Ninebullets Radio and the daily posts, pics and videos from The Coronas while they recorded their new album in LA.

No list of mine would be complete without a quiet ‘thank you’ to Virgil Dickerson of Suburban Home Records. In May of 2007 he put up a free sampler cd of SHR bands on eMusic and I snagged some tracks. I had already moved to mostly blues and some indie in my music but finding those bands tipped the scales for me. Nearly five years later almost all the music I enjoy comes from small labels like SHR.

Got a 2011 list of your own?  Toss it in the comments section as I am always looking for new bands to squee over.

  • Blurred…
    February 12, 2013 | 4:06 pm

I have been trying to write the review for Blurred, by San Francisco singer/songwriter Alex Wise for a few months now but can’t seem to finish it. This is difficult for me to say but I get about halfway through the process and find myself so homesick I just can’t continue. The past few years have been full [...]

  • Arc & Stones…
    February 11, 2013 | 4:53 am

Now that Scooter is back sleeping nights I proclaim this ’dig myself out from under the mountain of un-reviewed music‘ week. Kicking off the week o’reviewing is Arc & Stones, the debut EP from Brooklyn band Arc & Stones. The guys are Dan Pellarin (vocals), Ben Cramer (guitar), Joe Doino (drums) and Eddy Bayes (bass).  I had [...]

  • Telegraph Taboo…
    January 21, 2013 | 8:45 am

So, I was in the mood for some blues and whoosh – blues appeared. Other people get coupons, bills and news updates in the mail while I get blues music. Cool new blues music in the form of the debut release Telegraph Taboo from the Chicago-based band Nick and the Ovorols. This is not a pretty album. The vocals on a few tracks [...]
