The Week in Music…Blogs – Jan 12, 2013 to Jan 18, 2013
Everyone has snow…except us. Apparently, through the force of my will alone, I have created the only snow-free zone in the southeast.
Bman’s Blues Report had a nice article on the upcoming 3rd Annual Clarksdale Film Festival. If you all get a chance to go, check out Cat Head while you are roaming around town.
Little Indie Blogs previewed the new single ‘Portrait‘ from singer Josephine Oniyama and shared her touring schedule for the next couple of months.
Many years ago when the ‘Bit was still a tiny bit, Kahuna and I lived in Florence, Al for a while. Florence is a cool place to live – big blues festival in the summer, great downtown and some of the neatest kid parks I have ever seen. It is also just across the river from Muscle Shoals, Sheffield and Tuscumbia. Together they form what locals refer to as “The Shoals”.
This is also the place where four session players (Barry Beckett, Roger Hawkins, David Hood and Jimmy Johnson) bought a recording studio in 1969 and created the distinctive Muscle Shoals Sound. The documentary Muscle Shoals premiered at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival. Below is the trailer for the movie.
Autopsy IV from Ninebullets.net put out another awesome radio show Thursday night. I have been trying to find a Dorado track to put in the jukebox so it was nice to hear them in the show. He also had tracks from Drag the River (yay!) and The Heavy Horses as well as a new release from Shooter Jennings. Pop over to Ninebullets and check out the track list, then follow the link to listen to the recording of the show. Bryan shared the news on his Facebook that the Ninebullets Radio Show will be moving to Saturdays 2-4pm in Feb. (This adds an hour more of music to the show!)

Stacey from the official SXSW site listed over a hundred more bands added to the 2013 line up. She also included a link to the list of around 1000 bands scheduled to perform this year. I noticed Lee Bains III and the Glory Fires, BOY and Frank Turner on the latest addition.
Tony Porter from Music That Isn’t Bad reviewed The Amends new release, What We Could Be.
Ninebullets.net put up the December podcast, while Charlie, Mike and Bryan added posts with their best albums of the year.
Ryan Bingham tossed up a new video because he knows I get twitchy if I go too long with nothing from him on the blog.

Mostly Harmless with Dammit Damian tossed up his Top 10 of 2012 and added a podcast to the mix.
Farce the Music listed their top 75 albums of 2012.
Easy Street Records blogged about the closing of their Queen Anne (Seattle) area record store. (- thanks Penny)
Rune from Ninebullets.net listed his favorite albums of 2012 while AutopsyIV spun out another amazing Ninebullets Radio Broadcast.

Finally, from Noisetrade.com, Mason Jar Music presented The Storm is Passing Over – A Hurricane Sandy Benefit album from Mason Jar Music and Friends.
In the wake of Hurricane Sandy, Brooklyn-based collective Mason Jar Music has assembled an all-star collection of indie-folk artists to create The Storm is Passing Over, a benefit album of fifteen classic American storm songs. Donations exchanged for these recordings will go directly to support ongoing relief work in New York City and the tri-state area.”
Lots of great songs on this. I am partial to the Memphis Minnie and Joe McCoy version of ‘When the Levee Breaks’ but Micheal Daves does a nice job on his rendition. ‘The Storms are on the Ocean’ by Aoife O’Donovan is beautiful and probably my favorite of the group. I also love ‘Lonesome River’ by Roseanne Cash (love, love her arrangment on this) and Tift Merritt’s ‘Swing Low Sweet Chariot’.
The album is available to download for free but a tip jar has been set up on the webpage and all tips will go to Hurricane Sandy relief efforts.

The Week in Music…Blogs – July 21 to July 27, 2012
I pretend this is moment Jimmy read my tweet.
Last night I watched the StageIt concert with Jimmy Buffett and it was so very cool.
The StageIt crew (along with Evan Lowenstein) set up in Jimmy’s dressing room at Comerica Park in Detroit.
Mike Utley hung out and Matt Hoggatt showed up to sing one of his songs.
Jimmy sang Tin Cup Chalice and Boat Drinks. He also read tweets aloud as they went by and now everyone watching knows I was eating soup right before the show.
( I didn’t know Jimmy would see the pre-show tweets or I would have, you know, sent something clever or cool…or just not weird)
The show was a lot of fun and Jimmy raised over 20,000 for charity. Yea!

Emma Warren from Music and Words by Emma Warren described the opening ceremonies of the London 2012 Olympics and went over a good bit of the music played for the event.
Eddie Baranak from The Sights is keeping a tour diary. His latest entry has quite a few photos and general ‘on the road’ stuff.
American Blues Scene interviewed Big Llou Johnson on his new album, They Call Me Big Llou, his acting, B.B. King, the Just Blues Music Awards and his radio and announcing work. The entire interview is available to steam from the site as a podcast.
Autopsy IV from ninebullets.net asks the readers to Gimme Your Top 5 Of The First Half Of 2012 and also lists his choices.
Rachel from Adobe and Teardrops interviewed singer/songwriter Hannah Aldridge on her music, her family and her new EP, Wanderer. Rachel also streamed two tracks from the EP.

The Week in Music Blogs – July 7 to July 13, 2012
Okay, had my coffee, ready to get to work.
In No ‘Rest’ for the Working Man, Steve Wildsmith from The Daily Times (Blount Co. TN) interviewed Jason Isbell.
Blues guitarist Cary Morin updated his blog, Open Mic Odyssey, with an entry about his west coast tour.
Peter Parcek added another installment to his Unsung Heroes of the Blues Guitar series. This week he profiled Muddy Waters’ guitarist Sammy Lawhorn and shared a couple of videos.
AutopsyIV reviewed Look Out Mama, the new Hurray for the Riff Raff release and streamed several tracks from the album.
Chuck Dauphin over on Billboard reviewed Uncaged, the new release from the Zac Brown Band. He also tossed up a couple of vids for the album tracks. (as of this morning two had been pulled from you tube by Warner Music Group but one is still available to view)
In more Billboard-esque related news, Ed Christman wrote about the digital music pricing wars presently going on between Amazon, iTunes and Google and the effect those wars are having on the Billboard charts.
Michael Barwise from Michael’s Music Madness has his own radio show. He wrote about it and his other work at Hospital Radio.
Finally, check out #Rock Out With Your #Folk Out Press, which is kind of a daily music news aggregate helmed by singer/songwriter Corey Koehler.

Tony Conley from Rock Guitar Daily reviewed Tilting, the upcoming (and really good) release from Johnny Hickman.
Josh Hathaway over on Blinded by Sound reviewed the new Norah Jones album, Little Broken Hearts and tossed a stream of the album up for listening.
Delarue from New York Music Daily reviewed the Haley Bowery and the Manimals/Hannah vs the Many concert at Webster Hall.
At Screamer Magazine, Richard Rosenthal interviewed Ron Young from Little Caesar.
Heading south to ninebullets.net territory, Romoesidvicious reviewed Nah, Death Ima Comin’ for You, the upcoming release from Michael Dean Damron, and streamed a preview track from the album. While you all are over there, check out the ninebullets radio show from this week. The show had tunes from Have Gun Will Travel, William Elliot Whitmore, Pawn Shop Saints and so many more good bands.
Rachel over at Adobe and Teardrops wrapped up Pride Month with her review of White Noise, the new EP from Sarah Walk. She also shared a link to download the EP for free or for a donation amount of your choice.

Little Indie Blogs reviewed and provided a link to preview four songs from the Chapel Club upcoming release, Good Together.
The Steve Carlson / Jonah Dolan StageIt concert that had to be cancelled has been rescheduled for July 11th. Tickets are sold out now, but they usually release another bunch closer to show date.
Cameron Matthews over at Spinner previewed Hey Girl, a new single from Dig. Sow. Love. Grow., the upcoming (August 7th) album by the Buffalo Killers and offered it up as a free download.
Fire by Viv and the Revival is being used by NBC and Bud Light in their summer Olympics ads and promo spots. You all can see the first video on the band’s website and catch more over the next month.
The Young Electrics only need a couple more votes and they will be performing at the Olympics as part of the Emerging Icons. Pop over and click on the little star to help them. Seriously, how many times are you going to have the chance to say, “I picked one of the bands that played the Olympics“?
To finish out the list, bluesman Peter Parcek tossed out another in his series, Unsung Heroes of the Blues Guitar. This entry focused on Kid Ramos.

This is another short week as I have been on vacation and mostly without internet access.
Jaylen from the comments section (grin) shared a link to a free download of the new Joe Bonamassa single Driving Towards the Daylight.
Over on The Bowery Presents, A. Stein reviewed the Anders Osborne - June 21, 2012 Brooklyn Bowl concert.
Greg Victor from Parcbench reviewed Royal Southern Brotherhood and shared a cool vid of their track, New Horizon.
Autopsy IV tossed up a new podcast – Episode 26 of the Ninebullets Podcast – for download.
And that is pretty much it for this week. Oh yeah, the new Don Williams cd, And So It Goes, was a hit with the Dad-In-Law. He played it through twice on his way home from Gatlinburg.

Viv and the Revival released a new video from Seven-
Merlin Jobst interviewed Brendan Benson for The Line of Best Fit. They discussed Nashville, Benson’s new album What kind of World and his new label, Readymade Records.
John Allman from Ninebullets.net reviewed the new Bruce Springsteen album Wrecking Ball, while Autopsy IV convinced me to give the new Shooter Jennings release, Family Man, a listen.
